We took in a stray on Saturday.

While at Hollywood video renting our weekly entertainment, we found her wondering around crying in the parking lot. It was obvious that she was completely malnourished and probably dehydrated. However, she was a friendly little one that felt comfortable enough to lay in our laps and purr.

Pandora and I talked about it for a few minutes; tap-dancing around the fact that neither of us was going to leave this kitten out there. After a little struggle (resulting in a few scratches), we got her into the car and headed home. That night, she ate two whole cans of cat food, some softened butter, and drank nearly a cup of water. We had plans to let her go into the woods near Pandoras house, thinking that she was feral and would find suitable hunting ground with the other wild cats in the area but we found that she was almost too friendly to be born wild.

Pandoras mom said we could keep Domino (what we now started calling her) on the screened-in patio until we could take her to the ASPCA shelter. Sunday morning, Pandora got up early to make the trip. She reported that the shelter where she lived was a generally bad place that she got an uneasy vibe from, so we decided to keep Domino for a little while longer. We spent the day Sunday watching our movie, being lazy, and caring for the cat. She got a bath, a litter box, a bowl of dry food, a can of wet, and plate of chicken leftovers that we had for dinner. All in all, Domino seemed rather contented except for some nervous encounters with the inside cats (apparently they werent too keen on an additional cat taking up space and eating their food).

This morning, I called an old friends mother who is a nurse at the local animal hospital. She was able to refer me to another ASCPA shelter that she felt was better, and was confident that they wouldnt put Domino down or mistreat her. So, Pandora made the drive to my neck of the woods to drop her off.

Pandora and I spoke a few minutes ago and got a little misty-eyed about the whole experience. After hanging up the phone, I cried a little more.

Damn, I must be the only grown man that gets weepy over a damned stray.
